    Long Elected Mayor of Belfast

Naomi Long of the Alliance party has been elected Mayor of Belfast. She succeeds Sinn Feins Tom Hartley.

She Defeated the DUPs William Humphery by 26 votes to 24 Votes.

She is the first woman since 1981 (I think) to become Mayor.

Sinn Feins Danny Lavery has been elected Deputy Mayor.

The fact that a candidate from the middle-ground of Northern Ireland politics (rather than the fundamentalist extremes) has been elected as mayor must be cause for celebration - especially on a day when another innocent victim of sectarian hatred is laid to rest.

You would think this would be celebrated but as usual there was council politics at play.

The SDLP apparently were supposed to support the DUP candidate but didnt at the end and alot of Unionists were Annoyed that SF got the Deputy post.

DUP Cllrs have asked her to step down because of double jobbing etc.

Republican S., on one thread you are bemoaning the demise of the INLA, while on this thread you are celebrating the rise of the Alliance Party. Am I the only one confused by this? Is it an 'anyone but a Shinner' reaction?

There's always an undignified cat-fight over the mayoral job. Usually the deserving candidate loses out.

Not everyone who does not vote for the Alliance Party (... uh, that's pretty much everyone!) is a fundamentalist, an extremist, or even a fundamentalist extremist. The Alliance Party, for example, is not in any way nationalist. Does that make all nationalists fundamentalist extremists? If only they'd the time and the inclination! Too busy being normal, moderate people, with jobs to do, children to rear, bills to pay, etc. Please don't demonise!
