Alliance Party refuse to back UUP mayor for Belfast.

The Alliance Party is refusing to back the Ulster Unionists for any top posts on Belfast City Council because of its links with the Progressive Unionists.

Given that these 'links' are purely in the interests of practical power brokering, I do wonder if this is just a bit of hysteria and attention-seeking from the AP.

Doesn't matter what these links are in the interests of. It's still hypocrisy of the ultimate highest degree. That other piece of filth getting killed the other day is just the icing on the cake now, let's see how Sir Reg will eventually react to this....

Considering the UUP have complained for years about the links between Sinn Fein and the IRA, and used that as a excuse not to make the executive work, and even tried to have them excluded from the executive, then it is only right that the same is applied to them seeing as they are now openly linked to the PUP and UVF who are still ingaged in act of terrorism and drug dealing.

    I would agree.

This has been a terrible own goal for Unionism.

No, I wouldn't agree with such an assessment. In the interests of power brokering, the UUP has sacrificed its principles. As has been said, it is utter hypocrisy of them to do such a deal, especially the sake of a seat in a virtual executive, there being a reasonable chance that no agreement will be reached by November. This is not how the Ulster Unionists will recover from 2003 and 2005, they will more than likely lose votes and seats to the DUP and Alliance. And they'd have lost them anyway, I don't think one could criticize the Alliance for its decision in this instance.

Seems fair enough to me. Belfast should have a nationalist mayor anyhow.

That is not the issue under discussion, but the decision of the Alliance party to refuse to support the UUP on the grounds of their links to the PUP and UVF.

That's what I WAS discussing. It's high time that Alliance stopped following the UUP around like lapdogs and actually attempted to represent their ever-diminishing constituency of cross-community advocates.
And since Unionists almost never attempt to represent the whole community, and nationalists almost always do in mayoral positions, then Alliance ought to be supporting a nationalist mayor anyway.

From my understanding, the union between the PUP and the UUP is being used solely to increase the UUP's influence in the Assembly. I'm pretty sure this does not amount to an expression of support for a paramilitary organisation by the UUP.

The Alliance Party faces a choice between supporting a candidate whose party sits with, but does not support, a group which has links to paramilitaries, or a candidate whose expressed wish is the destruction of the state.

Personally, I wouldn't like to have to make that choice, but I can see the AP making serious gain out of this at the expense of the UUP.
