Several websites in the north seem to have hints that SDLP Mayor Pat McCarthy may face questions from the media over the 1973 IRA killing of Market's man Owen Devine.

It's becomingh a bit of a mayoral tradition then, answering questions about the murder of Markets men. I seem to recall former Shinner mayor Alex Maskey and his office staff having a few questions to answer about a much more recent murder of a Markets man not so long ago.

    JC,

Is that confirmation that Pat was involved in this murder? Is it common knowledge within the SDLP? First I'd heard of this was today and I was very sceptical until you as an SDLP supporter seemed not to deny it.

No, it is not confirmation of anything. I am unaware of the rumours that you are peddling on this site, and would invite you to link to a reputable news source reporting them to back up your assertion.
Furthermore, I am extremely sceptical of this kind of unattributed and clearly malicious rumourmongering. I was merely pointing out that unlike Pat McCarthy, a former mayor HAS already been investigated in relation to the murder of a man from the Markets.

    JC,

The only 'reputable' source I can find is SDLP Mayor Pat McCarthy's own admission that he was interned as a member of the Official IRA.

He doesn't seem to have been asked about Mr Devine's murder but given speculation on the topic the Sunday's may cover it.

His own comments on the topic are part of a Daily Ireland article not online until 1500.

It also makes the APNI comments on being unable to support SF's nonimee due to her past possibly a little hypocritical.

So there is no reputable source for this rumour mongering. Nice. First the Shinners refuse to support a Nationalist mayor, then they attempt to slur him on day one. Very nice.

    JC,

I'm not a shinner. Stop being so paranoid.

Mr McCarthy was just quoted on the radio saying he is not ashamed of his past.

Like any elected representative his past if it involves things like IRA membership is relevant and worthy of at least a passing reference. Particularly when his nomination was endorsed over another nomination because of their past.

If he was a member of the Officials that's interesting. If he was actively involved in killings that's very interesting.

Questions on this should be put and answered instead of you 'shooting' the messenger.

The pro-shinner DI is running the story with a positive spin describing him as an interned political prisoner.

Okay, you're not a Shinner, simply spinning a Shinner line. I don't see the difference, but presumably you do.
Now, no one is disputing Pat McCarthy's internment. What I am querying is your suggestion that he was involved in a 1973 murder. The DI does not make mention of that, as far as I can see.
Can you explain where this rumour is coming from, that justifies your propagating it without any supporting evidence?

This is only a wild guess JC but it occurred to me that Sinn Féin Cllrs would be voting for their own candidate (Carál Ní Chuilín) in the contest to be the next mayor. I'll also hazard a guess that the rest of the parties voted for the SDLP candidate so there wouldn't be a SF mayor.

Certainly a crazy theory but sounds plausible to me.
