Maghaberry prison officers suspended | UK news | The Observer

An investigation into the death of a prisoner in Northern Ireland's highest-security jail has led to 16 prison officers being suspended from duty. Colin Martin Bell, 34, was found dead in his cell at Maghaberry prison in August. He had been put into a 'suicide watch' cell because the father of two had a history of self-harming.

The Observer has learnt that CCTV footage taken from a camera trained on the cell showed Bell pacing about with a makeshift noose around his neck for more than 40 minutes. Sources inside the Prison Service said that during that period no one was monitoring his movements.

BBC NEWS | Northern Ireland | Hydebank fails its young offenders

As inspections go, they don't come much worse than this.

Inspectors visited Hydebank for five days in November last year. It was an announced visit, so the prison authorities knew they were coming, and they clearly didn't like what they found.

Their report says the centre was failing to perform effectively against any of the four tests they use to assess conditions and performance, and they make 182 recommendations for improvements.

As if that wasn't bad enough, this was the second visit by inspectors in two and a half years, so clearly many of the recommendations made then have yet to be implemented.

Banned in England, condemned by the High Court, yet ‘slopping out’ continues - Local & National, News - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Prisoners at an Ulster jail are still being forced to “slop out”, three years after a High Court judge ruled that the practice was “humiliating and distasteful”.

Inmates in more than 280 jail cells at Magilligan Prison — almost two thirds of the accommodation — still do not have in-cell toilets or washing facilities, the Belfast Telegraph has learned.

During lock-down inmates can use a button to alert prison staff if they need to access bathroom facilities, but when this is not possible they are forced to use a chamber pot provided in cells.

Its only to be expected in a country in which you face being murdered, intimidated and under constant pressure to become corrupt. Not many places to live in Northern Ireland in which you will not come under these pressure, politics a side who would want to become involved in the prison service?
