This isnt about Irvine aligning himself the with UUP. Its about the UUP accepting his support when he is still aligned to an armed paramiliatary group. "No guns no government" - that was the mantra, so what has happened to change that? Maybe if the IRA re-armed the UUP would have no problem with that now?

Just right. Why aren't the same people that were crying over IRA arms doing the same here. If people were saying SF shouldn't have been getting into government without decommissioning, then why are the UUP allowed in, with might I add an extra unwarranted ministry if an executive is established, without Ervine's drug dealing and murdering buddies having to decommission. Pure unionist hypocrisy. Absolute joke!

But you see, we're looking to move forward peacefully and democratically. Something that the UUP have been claiming to have been doing all along, yet now we see that they allign themselves with murderers and drug dealers.

    David Ervine

David Ervine certainly has ruffled a few feathers with his support of the UUp nominees when the time comes.

The standing orders of the NIA require MLAs to state if they are "Nationalist", "Unionist" or "Other" and as far as I understand this is how the weighted majorities are calculated (ie) for any legislation etc a majority of Unionists and majority of Nationalists need to support it.

There are so many flavours of Unionism it is about time they started wakening up to the reality that Unionism as a whole would be better off with a single Unionist party. There could be various groups within that party pusing various points of view, but if they were to put a singel Unionist party to the electorate, they would most certainly get a PR bonus in Assembly seats. The number of UUP / DUP / PUP / UDP votes which don't transfer supports this.

However, David Ervine has done a politically sensitive & unselfish act by taking the UUP whip. He has in effect made it pointless for voters in the future to support the PUP. A bit like vote PUP get UUP. Perhaps there is a bigger picture to consider. Maybe the PUP elected reps want to take the democratic process further but the armed wing want to go back to terrorism and organised crime (not that they stopped). Perhaps David Ervine wants to embrace democracy, but cannot within the PUP. This could be a tentitive step towards fully joining the UUP.

What ever the future holds for NI, it will not be straight forward. I hope Ahern & Blair can finish the project, because I cannot see Brown taking as close an interest when he takes over in the UK, and I don't imagine Enda Kenny will be able to change Browns mind. I know Enda Kenny is 110% behind the GFA & the 2 govts efforts to restore the NIA.

The best chance NI has lies with NI politicians biting the bullet (excuse the pun!) and taking the tough decision to enter govt together. NI society is falling apart. Economy in a wreck, schools and hospitals failing, roads getting budgets slashed by NIO, watered down legislative programmes..... is makes terrible reading.

David Ervine is doing the right thing. He is also doing it for the right reasons. I for one hope it works not only for the sake of politics and democracy in NI, but in the UK as a whole, in Ireland as a whole and I've no doubt a peaceful, stable and progressive NI will help contribute further to the ROI economic boom and higher standards of living for everyone.

I guess only time will tell.

The argument of SF teaming up with an independent republican is redundant here, the point is that the UUP has used decommissioning as a tool to stall the assembly since the beginning and are then only too happy to team up with David Ervine when the UVF aren't even on a ceasefire. Meanwhile the unionists cry wolf over IRA 'criminality' that they can't even give examples of, never mind prove. Reg Empey has shown himself to be a total hypocrite here.

Hear hear. I've been totally unimpressed by him since he became leader. Trimble had more integrity in his little finger than Empey has displayed in the last year. The only worthwhile member of the UUP left is Sylvia Harmon
