Man Rescued From Fermanagh Cave

..police and members of the Irish Cave Rescue Organisation have achieved a dramatic underground rescue.

They first had to remove rocks with drills and explosives to free the victim..

..the unnamed man - who was unhurt - was pulled from the ground after spending 12 hours trapped some 250 feet into a cave in Fermanagh. The man was caving with two friends at Gortalughany near Swanlinbar when he became trapped in a crevice on Sunday morning.
Luckily this plonker wasn't hurt, but alarming to read the authorities used explosives to get him out of there, wonder who took care of that, what was used etc? Does ICRO have training in that?

Lucky man to get out and I can only imagine the trouble they had to go to to effect a rescue.

Sorry to go off thread but it's still relevant in the sense of rescues having to occur to get people out of situations, or worse case to recover bodies. In particular I'd allude to people climbing Carrauntoohill near Killarney. Every year the Kerry Mountain Rescue folks have to go out and rescue people and there have been a considerable number of fatalities in time round those parts too. I can remember at least 3 episodes of the Rescue Team being called out recently.

Having climbed Carrauntoohill 4 times myself (twice up the "Devil's Ladder" (which is the easy route but still to be borne in mind it's climbing a mountain and no cake walk either)) and twice up a more difficult route to the east of the Lake) one would be expected to take precautions as I always do, like wearing proper Boots with grips, a climbing stick/ski stick, bring mobile for contact purposes, spare clothes, food in case it's needed and torch, etc etc - and ALWAYS travel accompanied. In my time round those parts, the number of dumbasses one meets as if they're out for a stroll, climbing the highest mountain in the country with no supplies and "runners/trainers" (very good if one wants to take the chance of breaking an ankle or worse a slide to a fatality). It's selfish in the extreme, in the sense of potentially having the Mountain Rescue folk to have to be called out and worse potentially may lead to fatal consequences. Some people just don't get it, have a clue or care less re the danger they put themselves in and possibly others in not taking precautions.

Thats it, the rescue people are extremely professional but their lives are at risk too anytime they are put into these situations. Even more so when they are forced to handle explosives!

I had referred to this man as a plonker just to flag up he wasn't a "victim" (see article) of anything except his own carelessness. And he won't be footing the bill for his carelessness.

Also today there is the story about 2 brits drowning rescuing a dog... I swear its like people think they are immortal or something.

Yep, the "dogs and owners in the river baby on the bank" thread is undergoing healthy debate. Personally, I know that you don't hop into a river even when it seems very harmless - rivers are absolutely lethal and a no no - those unfortunate ppl found that out to their cost
