    Mountbatten attack survivor 'forgives IRA'

30 years on Mr Knatchbull [Mountbatten's grandson Timothy Knatchbull 14 when he survived the attack at Mullaghmore] says he has learned to forgive the IRA killers. And his book From a Clear Blue Sky, is described by the publisher as "a book about reconciliation that asks searching questions about why human beings inflict misery on others, and suggests how we can learn to forgive, to heal and to move on."

..The IRA used 50 pounds of gelignite planted under the engine to blow up Shadow V.. By a miracle Timothy survived and was plucked from the water unconscious and seriously injured, deafened, his eyes scorched and his lungs filling with blood...

Thomas McMahon from south Armagh was later convicted of his murder and was jailed for life. However, he was released in 1998 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. Long before that he had disassociated himself from the IRA.

Warrenpoint happened the same day, 18 Paras killed. The morality of it is one that can be argued over, but it was at least an identifiable act of war. What happened in Sligo was pathetic, they murdered an old man and his family out fishing, and what's more an old man who was pretty much the only royal who gave a sh1t about the Irish. A low.

When the British left India, Mountbatten's last guest as viceroy was Eamon de Valera.

I was over in England at the time.

The headlines next day across all the Papers were 90+% on Mountbatten and 10% if that on the Paras.

If ever the 'Squadies' thought they were the mere Cannon Fodder for their 'betters' that must have been it!

But that's the precisely the kind of act that calls for forgiveness.

There's no need for anyone to forgive noblle heroic deeds.

What was it like being an Irish person over there during the IRA campaign in the 70's?

    How were you treated?

    Pretty good actually.

Even though they despised the IRA the English knew at heart they shouldn't really be here.

On the morning after Mountbatten/Warrenpoint attacks I expected some kind of blowback but none came....

So fair play to my English colleagues on that one.

The thing that grated the most really was that they certainly saw the Irish as fun loving but somewhat dimwitted lunatics really.

Mind you they couldn't stand the 'Pakis' and they feared and hated the Blacks.

The Irish they didn't mind too much except for the ones with the guns...
