Ghaddafi realised that his country might be attacked so he went the route of placating his enemies, it has been a very expensive route (but tellingly it was considerable less expensive than Saddam's) but basically Libya's coffers are open to US/UK people (if they can drum up political support and can come up with a story of how Libya was behind all their woes) who want some extra cash.Originally Posted by Ebeneezer
In reality, in normality, most of the world's countries are up to their elbows in blood through direct participation in conflicts, the arms trade etc and if everyone had to behave as Libya does there would be trillions flying across the globe every day. Britain would have an overdraft of quadrillions, US too. Fact is if every country had to do what Libya is doing now there would be a real chance at world peace.
There were also claims made against Iraq once the US opened it up to their control (ironically involving prisoner abuse from 1991).
And people are getting their claims in early for Iran...

I admire Gadaffis pragmatism and despise Dodds cynicism .
It was only less expensive than Saddams because Saddams Country sat atop a sea of oil and was strategically an enemy of Israel and positioned right next to Iran.
