Jets cost 35k an hour to keep in the air, they need massive support staff.

For a nation which had few proper roads at the time, nor had ever built anything of note in 70 yrs it would have been excessive.

Any way a few jets would not prevent a serious invasion attempt.

lets call a spade a spade, if hospitals are bad in the Republic or the Uk, lets highlight it and condem it - but to give a Hospital flagship status when it is guilty of the above is crazy

High debt, crap quality of life?
Who cares when you can invade Iraq!
The thing is, they couldn't have invaded Iraq, not alone. Not even with their high-debt/small army ratio. In 1991, alone, the british would've been crushed by Saddams Republican guard. If not for 10 years of American sanctions, neither the USA/UK could've invaded Iraq together in 2003, let alone seperately.

Alone in 2003, the UK couldn't have done it either. They were nothing but a complimentary force. Of course, thats not what the limeys told each other. No, this was 'pretend' empire. Untill of course Shia irregulars chased them to the hills with their WWII weapons.

Your yet another inadequate with low self esteem, get a life.

The UK armed forces, Paras, Marines, SAS etc are the most experienced in the world and widely regarded so, even by the Americans.

There are a world of different fighters.

The Czech budget is similar to the free state budget, are you saying they can't afford attack fighters?

    Ireland also has significant resources.

90 % of the defence forces budget goes on high wages, pensions and compo for deafness, bad backs etc.

Without increased spending no it could not.

They are not "fighters" , they are light ground attack jets.

Americans claim someone elses forces are better than their own? Yeah, sure. This crap is constantly parrotted by UK mouthpieces. All armies claim this about themselves, but the UK goes one further to speak for others about themselves.

The SAS are profusely overated. This is proven by the laughable account of their humiliation in 1991 by regular Iraqis. After being chased by goat-herders, the SAS claimed the goat herders were 250 soldiers, all of whom they killed. Moron Mcnabb claimed to be wrecking tanks were there was no armour deployed, killing Iraqis by the truckload.

Its one thing - and maybe even a thing of esteem, to critisize humble quality. Its another thing entirely to critisize people who overhype themselves, who are noted examples of mediocrity.

Anyway, the fact remains. They'd have been crushed by the Iraqis alone in both wars.

The SAS were not over rated to the 50 odd IRA members they shot dead in ambushes.

The SAS set up the elite American delta force in the early 80s. They have possibly more post WW2 conflict exp then any other unit in the world. US commanders hold UK infantry forces as a bench mark.

The Royal Marines are held in awe by the US marine counterparts due to their training.

The UKs army is widely regarded as the most professional in the world.Only an idiot barstoll republican would claim the SAS are crap etc
