    Youth charged with officer murder

A 17-year-old youth has been charged with the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll in County Armagh earlier this month.

Constable Carroll, 48, was shot dead as he answered a call for help in Craigavon on Monday 9 March.

The youth is also charged with having a firearm with intent to endanger life and membership of a proscribed organisation, the Continuity IRA.

He is to appear at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

The 17-year-old also faces a further charge of collecting information likely to be of use to terrorists.

Obviously no comments should now be made on this specific case-but how the hell could someone who was 5 at the time of the ceasefire have a grudge against a policeman for policing during peacetime? It seems very odd.

After thirteen days, I imagine they would get a boy of that age to admit to anything.

Sure, just as was the case for every other "interview" carried out by the RUC/PSNI/BA over the last 40 years.

Republican Sinn Féin condemns the charging of a youth before a British court following his detention without charge for over 13 days by the British colonial police. The extended nature of his detention calls into serious question the veracity of any so-called 'evidence' being presented against him.

This follows very public and high profile requests from both Alex Maskey and Gerry Adams of the Provisionals that those in custody be charged immediately. The 17-year-old's period of detention was due again for renewal on Tuesday.

His solicitor also bunked up beside him all night and was able to fend off the police with a broken bottle.
Anyway, how would Policemen get near the kid in a police station? They only have contact with him during interviews. Absolutely no way to be persuasive at any other time.
    Sarcasm off.
