Education Minister reported to the PSNI

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has been reported to the police for praising IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Ms Ruane was speaking at a prize-giving ceremony at St Colm's High School in Twinbrook last week.

The complainant claimed Ms Ruane's remarks breached the law on glorifying terrorism.

It is rather scary to infect children with the truth. I suspect the days of keeping them dumb are over and you and your ilk need to get over it.

It's never wise 'to glorifying sucide'. According to your previous leader Tony Blair the war was won by neither side. Do you really think that nationalism would have achieved anything without the martyrdom of the likes of Bobby Sands?

The school was in Sands' home area , she spoke about how his actions were a part of the process that brought peace, afterall wasnt the releasing of political prisoners a huge part of this?
Bobby Sands won a mandate for his actions when he was elected,he was a political prisoner and the troubles wernt some kind of crime wave as Thatcher thought.
Unionists hate him because he was right, and he won international support for being right.

I dont see how mentioning a figure from the troubles breaks any terrorism laws, especially when its used to encourage peace.
It was a long time ago, theres been many statements made about the past and even films being made.
The unionists will kick up a stink about a republican prisoner of the past and then run along to their UVF bonfires in July and bang their war drums.
They need to realise that we simply dont care if they get upset at our history, they can throw their dummy out of the pram all they like, its all theyre good for.

Something like a Black president? The blacks in the US did that without 30 years of bombings and murder.

He was quite a poet and his poems should be on the curriculum. North and South.

First off i didn't vote for TB

What have they achieved nothing NI is still part of the UK - ok BS died for a cause he believed in but it was pointless, he could have been the Gerry or the Martin and talked for the IRA in the peace process.

Telling school kids its ok to starve yourself to death is unwise and infact stupid.

she spoke about how his actions were a part of the process that brought peace

Peace what did his death bring Rioting right across NI and innocent people killed as a result of the Rioting.

So St333ve tell the real facts !!

People dont recognise the conflict as just a terrible period in history, everyones still concerned about labels and who was right or wrong.

If it was confined to history then people would be fell free to speak about it.
It's ridiculous that the hunger strikers are taught in history class yet if the education minister mentions them then she is reported to the police.
Its this living in the past mentality that causes tensions.

The past was terrible, but so is every conflict.
You cant censor peoples opinions, everyone has differnt opinions about past conflicts all over the world.
    The troubles are no exception.
