Gunsmoke and Mirrors : How Sinn Féin dressed up defeat as victory

Book by Henry McDonald. Reviewed in today's Irish Times by Richard English. ( unable to provide link ). Going by the review, it should be an interesting read which might challenge uch of the accepted wisdom re. the " armed struggle ". Has anyone here actually read it ?

This author is known to be a "sticky" and as such unsupportive of Sinn Féin so I would not necessarily assume that his version is right.

"sticky"? Weren't the stickies the Official IRA? The same IRA that refused to escalate sectarian violence which was clearly looming and called a ceasefire instead. Unlike The Provos who chose to implement an indiscriminate murder campaign, leading to a ruthless Loyalist backlash. The same provos who many years later finally called their ceasefire and destroyed their weapons, having filled the graveyards with corpses? I know which I prefer.

Have to say I know nothing about the author, but the review today certainly whetted my appetite for the book. To hell with the Santy socks this year, I want that book instead !

Have you read any of Gerry Adams books, e.g. "Hope and History: Making Peace in Ireland"? It would be worth a read as a counterbalance.

The loyalist campaign started in 1966 - the Provos formed and started their campaign in late 1969/early 1970.

Look into buying that history book.

The only counterbalance it would be good for is if one of the legs of your table was wonky

So, how many did they kill before the provos got in on the act?
