And a reduction in the standard rate of VAT to 15%.

I wonder if there'll be a reduction in the 20% tax rate.

"They stole my land, burnt my olive trees, destroyed my house, took my water, imprisoned my father, killed my mother, starved us all, humiliated us all. But I am to blame : I shot a rocket back. So they stole more of my land, burnt my olive trees, destroyed my house, took my water, bombed my country..."

"And a reduction in the standard rate of VAT to 15%."

And I predict in two years this will be restored at 20%, meaning an overall increase of 2.5% from 17.5%.

Oh, BTW, Newry and Enniskillen are rubbing their hands ............ for now.

Right so it will make any difference.

Retailers are getting their margins squeezed already so any short term price reduction will get reversed in 2009 and then when the rate goes back up the prices will rise.

Sorry but this is storing up inflation for the future.

    Don't forget Derry.

It's very difficult politically to raise taxes or restore them to their previous levels.

Once people get used to VAT being at 15% they'll be very p*ssed off if it's put back to 17.5% again let alone raised to 20%.

Keynesian economics 101. A real shame - it simply won't work.

Sadly no attempt by Mr. Darling to lower the minimum wage and get rid of the stickiness of wages. Get ready for lots of unemployment...

    Tory's next year then, clearly.
