People often talk of a "4 provinces" model when referring to a future federal united Ireland (usually with a far away gaze and quivering lip.) But how workable would a simple 2-component model be, comprising the north and the south? Not just a devolved Stormont answerable to the Dail, but both parliaments answerable to a Fereral government. I mean, in terms of population, votes, govt seats etc. Is it possible in theory at least? Obviously this is more a hypothetical thread than anything else. If NI went for it, the new state would undoubtedly have support and backing from GB, the EU and the US. So it would be difficult to see it not working.
