    the door kicked in

Anybody remember this phrase, when the brits were in raiding your home at 3 in the morning? Mum down the stairs with her night gown on, children crying,
while da was taken away, thrown in the back of a tank. "Irish ways and irish laws", what a great song!

In hindsight it would have been much easier to simply tow your caravan away.

But wouldn't those fine British soldiers have simply Yomped after them, blindfolded, with a 300 lb rucksack on their backs, following them only by telepathy, and kicked in their door anyway ?

Good one Kalif. But when I was growing up in Belfast(late 60"S/70s) we lived in an mixed area, with policemen living nearby with many other protestants. Given that the area is now catholic. Hence the movement at the time of both traditions into their respective areas.
My mother(RIP) was nothing but a lady, when are home was being ransacked by the soldiers. This reflected on the soldiers behaviour, as seeing our family as not some kind of animals. I remember them taking my brother away in a saracan early one morning. My father was chasing after them shouting take your contraception, divorce, and abortion, back to England with you"s, you british bastards. The Soldier sitting beside my brother remarked, " is that your father". My brother said "yes". to which the soldier replied " I bet your glad we are taking you away from him?". Thought it was funny at the time!

It happened to many homes throughout the north, for oh too many years. Some homes met with utter brutality, while others where more fortunate. My brother was arrested one night, he had a wooden leg. The soldier told him to get dressed. His wooden leg was under his bed. The soldier looked under the bed, seen the wooden leg, pointed his gun and told the person to get out from under the bed or he would shoot. He then pulled the leg out, we all laughed in the room, his mates and all.
Sometimes humor says a lot. Most of the soldiers where probably from working class backgrounds in the north of England, and in someways could sympahise with working class familys in the north. Not sure?

Anybody with similar experiences? Its kind of weird in a way, looking back. I remember a priest saying before," youn should watch what you complain about ,or god will give you someething to complain about". What makes us unique in the north, in someways, is our abilty to see through really non important things. And recognise things that really matter. I will leave the rest to your interpretation!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
