Mr McGlone said he was aware that people from a unionist background had claimed Irish passports, "because the country's traditional neutrality made it a safer passport to travel on".

    Irish when convenient.

It is cheaper is it not?
My father wasn't really political but worked in the Middle East in the late 70s. He reckoned an Irish passport was your free pass from a hostage situation.( We're Nordies) Doubt it would help your ass much now thanks to Shannon and images of certain political leaders brown-nosing Bush.
There was a time when it was the reverse, and many people from the 26 counties were applying for British passports based on their parents being born in England or their grandparents being born pre partition etc. This was when Irish people needed a visa to enter the States and Brits didn't. ************************ty 1980s.

Unionists travel on an Irish passport when visiting an Arab country simply to give the impression they are Irish when considering personal safety.
They have no gra for the Republic but use this facility for their own selfish reason.

I know plenty of both Unionists and Nationalists living in Northern Ireland who have both passports. Most do it for reasons of convenience. For instance, I understand that you will get a better (possibly longer?) visa for Australia on a British passport and I know from experience that it is cheaper to travel around Africa on an Irish one.
