    The President of Northern Ireland

This came up in conversation over the weekend after we were discussing the fallout from Mary McAleese's visit to the North last week.

Is it now time for the North to elect its own President and what would be the benefits of same???

You can't because you aren't a republic. Last time I checked you were still subjects of the English monarchy.

It is hardly credible that we have more than one poster who lives under the stairs wearing a red beret, so I'll assume that a number of pseudonyms are in operation.

I do but i thought that maybe this could be negotiated. There are several aspects to the way in which the North is run that does not conform to the ways of the British Monarch i.e. recognising Irish as an officail and equal language.

Then you are incredibly naive. Furthermore, Irish is not recognised in the north as an official and equal language thanks to the Unionists. What the hell do you think SF and others have been kicking off about the Irish language bill in the assembly for?

Re: The President of Northern Ireland

As long as the people of N.I. want to remain in the U.K. and the majority of people in the U.K. want to be a monarchy, the King/Queen will be N.I.'s head of state.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

The Unionists would not be best pleased at the Queen being removed as their head of state. Not a very diplomatic move.
