Mind you having John Hume round Paisley Towers for dinner on Boxing day was probably going too far.
What priest would that be? (Genuine question)

    Paisley - A Complex Man

he attracts a notable number of Catholic votes in his Westminster and european constituencies (famously attracting all the votes from an entirely Catholic off-shore island), where he has a reputation as a hardworking MP who will help or defend anyone whatever his or her religious beliefs and his views of them
    Rathlin Island

In the case of Rathlin Island, although being part of the federation of Irish coastal islands, their greatest support came from a most unlikely source: while the community is 100% Roman Catholic their local MP and MEP was none other than the now semi-retired Rev. Ian Paisley, who secured for them the necessary funding for an improved harbour, a wind energy electricity scheme and improved roads and housing. Every vote counts and he gets all 302 of them!

North v South in La Mon aftermath

In June 1978 the Provisionals ambushed an RUC patrol near Crossmaglen, killing one constable and kidnapping Constable William Turbitt.
In retaliation, loyalists kidnapped Fr Hugh Murphy, an RAF chaplain, from his home at Ahoghill.
The kidnappers said that they would return the priest in the same condition as the missing RUC man.
Following appeals from Protestant churchmen, including Rev Ian Paisley, Fr Murphy was released unharmed.
Constable Turbitt's dead body was later found in south Armagh.

I have actually heard on the grapevine that he's a good MP for his constituents.

Maybe they were so desperate to show gratitude they voted more than once.

I've heard the same thing, and I've no doubt that quite a number Catholics voted for Paisley, and indeed for his son, especially given some of the other choices on offer in North Antrim.

However, there is quite a discrepancy between 302 and 75 so I'd be interested to know exactly when this voting pattern took place, as it's clearly quite a notable one.
