"The thing that always annoyed me about traditional Irish historiography was the paradox of its Anglocentrism. People are now prepared, I think, to confront the possibility that many Irish problems are, in a sense, indigenous to the Irish situation." Roy Foster (1989).
I didn't even know the PUP were still around.
Yes, Dawn Purvis took Ervine's old seat.

Actually whatever else you want to say about the loyalist paramilitaries, they know their job and they do it well. (whether or not it's worth going to hell for is something they will have to take into account themselves)Originally Posted by Nem
They will keep on to their guns.
From a loyalist point of view they are dead right. It gives them power. Wait and see what happens next month. They can come into any mixed area they want and decorate it in flags.
The cops wont intervene because it is a "community issue" apparently, whatever that is. Nationalists will be reluctant to try and stop them because they know that the loyalists are armed to the teeth and the cops dont give a ************************.
Add to this the fact that if a few loyalists have guns it is really easy to scare the southerners away from doing anything about a united Ireland and you will get your answer - from a loyalist point of view they would be mad to decommission.
Of course PIRA decommissioned at the drop of a hat because Paisley told them to but that is a different story.
That is a very interesting question about how this summer will go. I'm sure you're right re: flags. But I also think that Margaret Ritchie did give them a clear signal last year about this and the funding that went with it. It is a pity that a distinct minority in these deprived areas stand in the way of making life better for a lot people there. The guns serve no purpose and they need to be taken out of society.

You have said it all and you have said it well. Congratulations.Originally Posted by Apple bastard
I think loyalists are reluctant to hand in all their weaponry with the increased activities of the dissident republicans e.g. increased attacks on protestant property , orange halls, churches
Ah, any excuse to keep thugs armed! If some teen spray paints nasty word on a wall, is this another reason to keep arms?Originally Posted by stevey2005
Do drugs have anything to do with remaining armed or the illegal arms selling industry?
Food tastes better when you put it all together! It's the one best mayonnaise!
David ervine claimed before he died that the UVF will respond violently to a united Ireland whatever the circumstances . Furthermore the bulk of these weapons were supplied by the British intelligence services , the bulk of their leadership are controlled by the British intelligence services . Therefore they will decommission their weaponry only when the people who gave the weaponry to them and direct them in its use tell them to do so . Just as they will use it again should the British intelligence srvices direct them to use it again.
Sadly the myth that these British counter gangs act in an autonomous manner from those with an extensively proven track record of controlling , directing and arming them still persists due to the myth making and promoting Irish media who continue to ignore the obvious elephant in the room as regards loyalist paramilitary groupings. Because it is still politically necessary to perpetuate the myth that the British were not controlling them and only acting as piggy in the middle . That is of course absolute rubbish
