PSNI told not to use words "Jaffa" or "Fenian

Fenian, hun, taig and jaffa are among the terms outlawed for police officers in a pamphlet which outlines to them how to avoid causing offence.

The Guide to Appropriate Language has various categories of words and suggests acceptable alternatives.

Religion, minority ethnic communities, gay people, women and transsexuals are among the linguistic issues covered.

Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde says in his foreword that using the right language "sends an important message".

From personal experiance i find the PSNI to be a very poor police service.
Why do they need a guide to tell them not to insult people with sectarian names?
Surely even the thickest of people know this already, why are police officers being educated on very basic common sence arnt these people supposed to be adults?

What next a "how to brush your teeth guide?"
Abstinence makes the Church grow fondlers.

Ma'am could be construed as sexist. They should call everyone a subject. Then there would be no problems.

Yeah kinda seems obvious that they would know not to do this. I wonder how msny PSNI members are like "Really? I used to tell the fenian dyke polack to get back in the kitchen?"

    Then again.......

I think this is the same thing as is done with a lot of public bodies.
They hand out a leaflet or email to all their staff, then if the member of staff steps out of line and uses inappropriate language towards someone and a complaint is made.
The organisation can cut the employee loose saying that they did what they were supposed to do, they gave them a little book (or whatever) telling them what they can and cant say, so its not the organisations fault.

They have fulfilled their obligations under equality legislation etc, so they can't be sued. The person complaining can them only sue the employee,.. which is rather pointless cos the average employee does not have as deep pockets as the average public body.

See, it makes sense. lol. Its an arse covering exercise!!
Where they burn books, they soon burn people

So what do they call those yummy biscuits with a spongy bottom, chocolate top and orangey jelly bit in the middle? Person of the Lutheran Perusasion Cakes?

And if they want to have a reasoned discussion of the 1867 uprising?

Would like to point out that speaking Irish within earshot of the PSNI is still quite risky business.

They dont seem to be widely briefed on the issue.

You can guarantee you will be screamed at but at least nowadays it seem you can avoid arrest, progress of a sort perhaps.
