DUP advisor - "Pope is the anti-Christ"

Why are unionists constantly let away with anti-Catholic remarks?

Why are Catholics always expected to just take remarks like this on the chin?

An appaling statement by someone that should know better and in a decent society this man would be ostracised from the political party he's a member of. However, many see nothing wrong with anti-Catholic or anti-Irish comments such as this.

Any DUP members/supporters got anything to say about this?

The man got a right bollocking on the airwaves and he is doing so on this website if you care to read the other thread on the issue.

Probably not. Why do you associate criticism of the Roman Catholic church with anti-Irishness? Are you saying that someone can't be Irish unless they're also a Roman Catholic?

The comments from the pastor are much more respectful of Catholics than 95% of the stuff posted by athiests on this site.

If you want to condemn "anti-catholicism", I suggest you start with those to post such views on this site.

Why don't you start: Quotes and context please, and an argument as to why these quotes are so egregious.

There is already a thread on Mr Thompson's comments which deals with both the issue he was addressing and his views more generally. There are also plenty of threads where the difference in world view between Christianity and Atheism are being debated. Do we really need another?

Probably not. I can't see the other thread on Mr. Thompson's comments, but perhaps White Horse could locate it, or another thread relevant to his gripe and post there.

Sad, but indicative of a fundamentalism that is an ever present within unionism. It should also be remembered that other elements used to believe that Ulster protestants were the lost tribe of Israel, so bizarre and baseless views do have a resonance within unionism.

The only importance here is the fact that this man is an advisor to a Stormont minister. A minister with a remit to cater for all the people of the six counties regardless of religion; gender; race etc. If this advisor believes that the spiitual leader of 40+% of the people of the six counties is the anti christ one wonders at the type of advice the minister actually receives.

Because calling the pope the anti-Christ makes them sound like lunatics, and if they want to make themselves sound like lunatics, why would their political opponents try to stop them?

Well if a person actually believes wine turns into the blood of a man who was murdered 2,000 years ago because a priest uses certain words during a mass (if they don't, then really they're an Anglican), surely such a person would have no right to criticise a considerably less ridiculous belief that the pope is the anti-Christ.
