SDLP minister 'puts vulnerable and old lives at risk'

A point pointed out by Sinn Féin's Micky Brady is that the SDLP's Social Development Minister (Margaret Richie) has opted to slash funding for the "Warm Homes Scheme" by 50%.

This scheme - for those who do not know - provides grants to make homes warmer and more energy efficient and is aimed at those most in need.

As Micky says "Minister Ritchie's decision will put people's lives at risk. Her neo-liberal approach has shocked many and is a retrograde step. The elderly, disabled and most vulnerable in our communities will face increased burden and abandonment. "

This shows the SDLP at their worst. Cut off from the realities that face the least well off in six county socitety, they are willing to slash key assistance that helps vulnerable people keep warm.

This is a shameful decision by Margaret Ritchie and shows a lack of concern for those struggling to make ends meet on a limited budget.

Sinn Féin put the interests of the least well off at the top of the list of priorities and as such I doubt if a Sinn Féin minister would choose to slash funding that allows the elderly and vulnerable to keep warm during those cold winter months putting lives at risk.

Looks like they are learning from a Sinn Fein minister who is attempting to cut the pay of thousands of low paid workers by 18.5%.

    Good point factual!

Before this I thought Catriona Ruane was a mean old hag for screwing over the teaching assistants, but now I heard about this, i think she is the greatest Minister for Education ever.

Shame on an SDLP minister for taking this action, the elderly are the most vunerable in our society and must be protected at all cost.....

I dunno...a lot of them are still pretty spry.

I personally would have thought that children with special needs were, generally speaking, the "most vulnerable".

    Wouldn't you agree?
