    Surprise, surprise, Unionists dump Irish

The Unionist minister responsible for fulfilling Tony Blair's pledge that an Irish Language Act would be introduced in Northern Ireland has reneged on that commitment.

It looks as plain as a pikestaff that Unionists wanting nothing "Irish" on their patch.

So we can now freely pull the plug on the drunken slurred argot that is the alleged language of Ulster-Scots?

The minister, Edwin Poots, has been on Radio Ulster's TalkBack prog just now insulting the "broken Irish" that some SF members try to address the Assembly in.

Are you really surprised that the minister has decided that making funds available for a language only a very small proportion of the population wish to speak (even compared to the Republic). This would not only be a waste of resources, but would serve to exclude the Unionist majority.

Why not use the funds to educate people about their heritage instead of forcing a language down their throat?

The Radio Ulster presenter opined that putting a Unionist in charge of delivering this Act was like putting a fox in charge of a hen-house.

An indicator the even at this juncture certain elements of the DUP are finding it impossible to grow into their job. As for 'broken Irish' anyone listening to Poots murdering the English language will have a joke at his expense.

As it is unionists have now put down a benchmark of how they are going to behave from here on in.

THL, this was a definite pledge given by a British Prime Minister to SF. Perhaps what ought to happen now is for SF to go back to Gordon Brown and ask what's the story.

If its written into the GFA, then you have a point, but even so .... and with all due respect, why not spend the money on something that will genuinely boost Irish culture, and is not just be used to give two fingers to Unionists.

Gerry Adams said in response to this move by Poots (and this is quoted on the BBC NI website) that "one way or another" there WOULD be an Irish Language Act. Hmmmmm.
