I agree. Local communities should have a say about their futures.Originally Posted by beardyboy

I feel more high-density housing needs to be rammed through in the towns and cities to save more of our national heritage in the long-run.
good point

The rural way of life is part of the national heritage too. Rural communities should be allowed to evolve and develop in a natural way, but I take your point about encouraging urban high density.Originally Posted by FutureTaoiseach
The planning laws are made for the south of england. We need planning laws to reflect us. We need to allow tghe building of clachans, replacement homes and so on.
here is how stupid these laws are.
My mother is inside a conservation area. her house was built less than 10 years ago.
The builder had to put in wooden sash windows.
She applied to change them to imitation plastic ones.
You cannot tell the difference from the road.
The reason for this was because the would insulate the house (very green !)
It would stop the noise of the street especially at night when the joyriders come out.
Told no.

Agree. When visiting the six counties in particular the Glens of Antrim I am struck by the terrible potential for it to become spoilt. If there is not a strong planning regime in place I fear the beauty will be lost because beauty is a "public good" and therefore not appropriable by the market. As such there is a rationale for government intervention to preserve that which we value but which the market does not.Originally Posted by FutureTaoiseach

factual - I live in glencloy - we cannot buy houses here - they are dearer than Douglas in Cork for example - we need housing here - what you say in your post corroborates peoples feelings here. We are to be an open air museam. It would suit the powers to be if we all had thatched roofs in tumbledown cottages and lean over the half door saying "top of the morning" to every passer by.Originally Posted by factual
I want my people to live in bungalows if the want, have the latest gadgets and mod cons. If it is good enough for chainsaws in belfast or wherever it is good enough for us. This place is for us - we live here - so it should be ran to suit us not tourists
