On May 25, 2004, BBC Spotlight broadcast a programme on the Glenanne gang. Former RUC SPG officer and Glenanne gang member William McCaughey was interviewed. McCaughey was questioned about the proposed retaliation for Kingsmill. He admitted on air that the plan was to attack the primary school in Belleek or the convent in Newry. According to McCaughey the plan was aborted because of the fear of the potential IRA response. This was corroboration from a second member of the gang.

”We are prepared to accept that this plan may have been regarded as morally unacceptable by the UVF. However the claim that the plan was instigated by military intelligence and was therefore part of a wider agenda has never been investigated. At a meeting with the PSNI Chief Constable and an Assistant Chief Constable in August 18, 2004 the Chief Constable was asked if McCaughey, a former RUC officer, had been questioned about these admissions. The ACC admitted that McCaughey had not been questioned.

”It is an irrefutable fact that members of the security forces, including the British army, were involved in the attacks in which our loved ones died. It is alleged that military intelligence played a role in these attacks and sought to provoke an escalation that would have had unthinkable consequences. We acknowledge that the UVF did not follow through on this plan. The failure of the PSNI to interview Mc Caughey, who is now deceased, has added to our suspicions. This is the reason we are so angry and shocked at the claims made in this document of an alleged ‘feud’. We are demanding the retraction of these claims and a proper investigation of the Glenanne gang”.

It was tough times in south armagh back in them days.
Murder gangs, whose members were also in the RUC and UDR killed at least 70 innocent civillians.
'given the shocking and appalling culture of collusion and illegality' within the RUC, 'one would wonder what other unacceptable practices remain hidden from the public'.

The British security forces have a lot to answer for.

They kept the conflict going years more than it needed to with their false reports and lies to governments.

I eagerly await the response from the likes of POGO to defend the soldiers of the crown on this one.

The british army should have left after the battle of the bogside,
    http://www.politics.ie/viewtopic.php?t=22880
..although they were rushed in to prevent the B-specials going balistic and were actually used to protect catholics the parachute regiment soon decided to show which side they were on (bloody sunday).
Ira recruitment skyrocketed and when internment was introduced and people were being dragged off to prison to get beaten inhumanly treated and degraded ( ECHR - 512, 748, 788-94 ) Ira recruitment was at its highest.
The british army almost created a civil war in the north, and the people up here had to watch while RTE portrayed them as great peacekeepers and basically saluted them as they said "job done".
They achieved nothing and made a bad situation a lot worse.
Every last one of the idiots should f^&* off home, they never knew what they were doing here and they never will.
"Operation banner" was a big wooden spoon that stirred the crap up so much it was spilling out all over the place, it then tries to take credit for cleaning up the mess.
Abstinence makes the Church grow fondlers.

And Eoghan Harris tells us we should accept this state without asking questions about its true nature...

I see the usual Shoneen suspects have stayed well away from this thread as it would be beyond even their great imaginative powers to spin this in England's favour.

Loving the logic. 'There was probably some colusion somewhere, so the claims of a single person, who has since died MUST be true'.

    What's your take on 9/11?

I see our very own "Skibereen Albatross" debacle is cited. There is no doubt that Harris will go down as one of the great political charlatans; perhaps even more so than his current chancer-turned-taoiseach sponser Bertie Ahern.
