Northern Ireland sex industry 'fastest growing in UK'

An organisation that campaigns for ethnic minorities has said Northern Ireland has the fastest growing sex industry in any part of the UK.

BBC News - Northern Ireland sex industry 'fastest growing in UK'

Speaking in the assembly on Tuesday afternoon, David Ford said the PSNI had identified 26 potential victims in Northern Ireland since April 2011.

Over £500,000 pounds is spent a week in NI on prostitution over 88 brothels according to an article on stormont today.

The DUP's David McIlveen said: "This is not Pretty Woman. This is not the glamorous happy hooker as appears in a number of the Sunday newspapers.

"This is rape for profit. This is a high-yield, low-risk crime."

I think its about time that our justice system throws the full weight of the law and more upon this filth in our society.
An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

Ulster's decline continues. The abyss yawns to swallow us all.

Sad that this was the only part of the article that you could post on.

Tragic stuff. But the obvious solution is to regulate the sex industry and legalize it. Provide the "workers" with proper protection. I don't just mean rubbers, but with legal status and rights just like any other worker in the state.

The Netherlands and some US states do this already to good effect. No point in criminalizing the oldest profession in the world. It's time to take a different approach.

Ren Dublin used to have the largest "red light district" in Europe until the heroic work of Frank Duff and Fianna Fail cleared it up. Now Eire still has the least sex industry in whole of western Europe even though the Irish are so keen to catch up in the degeneracy stakes. So no legalization is not the only solution.

Good Post Ren, Personally i think we should take the approach that the state of Nevada does.
Allow Legal brothels to operate under license and ensure they adhere to the standards which the state sets, and have a zero tolerance for any "illegal activity" outside that remit.
The real target for authorities North and South should be those criminals engaged in Human Trafficking.

Would you include the poor women that have been removed from their countries.

And sold into the sex industry and can not go home with the shame of what has been forced on them.

As long as its legalised sure theres no problem.

Then again only men can come up with a solution like yours.

"This is rape for profit. This is a high-yield, low-risk crime."
That is a line with impact and says it all succinctly.

Yep. Saw a documentary some time back about brothels in Nevada and how professionally run they were. There is a lot of money to be made in this area so the operators of these desert brothels take no chances with regulations. The women are provided with regular health checks. The facilities are kept clean at all times, while the clients are made use protection.

This is far more sensible than the underground brothels in Ireland that are being dangerously run and offer no protection to the women.

Prostitution is a fact of life. Instead of trying to stop it, politicians should be seeking to bring it into the regulatory framework. And by doing so it will remove another avenue of profit for criminals, while providing the state with taxes.
