It sounds like a domestic disturbance callout turned violent. Cops usually are the ones caught up in the middle of these disputes.
However the subsequent rioting in the estate is anything but normal. Absolutely stupid behaviour by all involved.

Apparently, officers undertaking an investigation in the wake of the stabbing came under attack during the night, with six petrol bombs, bricks and bottles thrown at them. PSNI superintendent Jason Murphy said: "The officer who was attacked has received treatment for a slash wound to the back of his head and a cut on his face. He and the others who attended responded to a call for help during a busy time. Their main priority was to ensure the safety of all those involved, particularly the two young children in the house."

All the appearances of a domestic dispute. Social workers will tell you that many people like this guy are usually seriously mentally disturbed. As for the petrol bomb throwers etc, they need a good long stretch of chokey to sort them out.
the mentally disturbed ones are nationalists who joined the crown forces. ireland unfree shall never be at peace.
It is in part a social problem. I bet there is a high level of unemployment on that housing estate. Better education and training is the long term answer.

who knows the full story yet. cops could have been provocitive (as usual) or inept, or the man in question could be a nutter. difficult to speculate just like how and why a 21 year old man died after falling out of the back of a PSNI van the other day.

incidentally, i didn't see factual post a topic on this, as it besmirches the name of his beloved political police force.A 21-year-old man who fell from the back of a moving police van in Maghera, County Londonderry, has died.
Paul Somerville, 21, from Maghera, was in police custody when the incident happened.
this actual death seems to have been bushed under the carpet for some reason.
