"The police were there assisting the community and if it wasn't for the police being there, we could be dealing with a much more terrible situation than we even are at this time," he said.
Half hearted support for the police and no outright condemnation of the people who threw petrol bombs, that they had to hand, at the police ...

O'Dowd making a fool of himself yet again.
And psycho "let's nuke Buenos Aires" crumbs makes a clown of himself, yet again, by turning this story into a political football. Typical muppetry from our one time SF voter friend.

Exactly - and if a DUP politician had described police coming under attack from petrol bombs in a Loyalist area as merely "a difficult situation" Ren and the usual suspects would be foaming at the mouth.....

I think JB means we would prefer posts of slightly more substance, if you don't mind, old chap.

Or "Thank you for your contribution" (as the mandarins of the Civil Service were reputed to phrase it).

I've got very little time for idiots who quote tired, overworked quotes which they think are astonishingly pithy and clever.
For the uninitiated, the words 'Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.' were the climax of a eulogy given at the funeral of the IRB leader Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa, by Patrick Pearse in 1915. The speech was clever and inspirational undoubtedly, but I have a lot of misgivings about Pearse (frankly at this distance he looks like a bit of a fruitcake) and O'Donovan was an absolute sh1t who spent the second half of his life hiring other fools to do his dirty work for him. Of all the 1916 leaders, Connolly is head and shoulders above the others in my opinion. Whether 1916 was actually necessary or even useful, I have my doubts.

By today's standards the speech was a bit of an embarrassment and I've read that it overshadowed far better speeches made at the time.
