Fermanagh shale gas 'could supply Northern Ireland'

There could be enough natural gas trapped within shale rock in County Fermanagh to supply all the gas Northern Ireland needs for decades.

The claim has come from the exploration company with a licence for the area.

Tamboran Resources has spent the last year analysing surveys and taking rock samples.

It now says preliminary results show there could be enough gas to guarantee security of natural gas supply for Northern Ireland over 50 years.

The region would even become a gas exporter, they claim.

"We're 100% certain there is gas there. We're 90% certain that we'll get it out in the sort of quantities we're talking about," said environmental director Tony Bazley.

In areas in the southern US where this process is used quite a bit, some people are able to set fire to their drinking water.

I agree all environmental impacts have to be carefully considered.

Will Fermanagh declare independence - UDI ?

    Will the ROI invade ?

God help us all - Fermanagh people with money - the ostentatious vulgarity will be breathtaking!

The exploration has been a cross border operation as the prospecting involved Cavan and Leitrim as well. There is a long way to go before they get a sniff of this out of the ground, as opposition to the project is already formidable, and will grow now that the testing has finished, and it is seen to pose a genuine threat. The truth is Tamboran are not trusted, or wanted by many people.

We should be pushing full steam ahead with this. No doubt though, the usual moaners will try to keep something positive and productive like this back, even if it is deemed environmentally safe.

We also need to start mining the lignite and building the wind-farms (oh, and that nuclear power plant too). The pathetic parish-pump politics of this backwards island need to end. These nay-sayers would rather have us forever dependent on handouts, in poverty, dying of pneumonia, and subservient to the whims of Russian and Saudi oligarchs.

Trouble is you'll always find a few bent, so-called scientists ready to declare any practice safe as long as the price is right. You only have to look at the pro-smoking lobby in the past for evidence of this. Currently the same sort of moral degenerates now speak up on behalf of oil companies to try & discredit the evidence of the 95% of scientists who argue that current climate change is both man made and dangerous. Who do you believe? If nine independent electricians told you your house was badly wired, and one electrician told you it was fine, (but he had a financial stake, because he had done the job for you, in the first place) who would you believe?
Much caution is needed. There are people who would be happy to go full steam ahead and build open sewers to process their own crap as long as it was ninety miles down the road.

All environmental impacts have to be carefully considered by law. This is a good chance for NI though, the company says it will generate 6.9 billion in taxable income. NI would be almost self sufficient and will be able to jump start a real economic infrastructure here.

This practice strikes me as more dangerous than your average sort of thing we talk about when we discuss environmental concerns. I'd ask you to take a look around the net and look at the balance of articles and make up your own mind. Blindly getting behind this because industry figures make nice promises is not the way forward.

i would welcome any jobs boost for fermanagh, (the last two days have seen huge Q's for job application's to new hospital) but as mentioned i don't think the environmental consequences have been properly investigated...mind you JR bridges...has a nice ring to it!
