Lol. Energy self sufficient? You're having a laugh right? Shale oil/gas extraction is prohibitively expensive. Factor in the huge environmental damage it will do to Fermanagh, Leitrim and Sligo, not to mention the health problems it will cause; this will end up costing Ireland more in the long term. But hey, at least you'll have locally made fuels.

Ah yes of course. Feck the inhabitants of the drilling area. Sure if they get poisoned water they can move, eh?

I happen to live near to the proposed area of fracking in the south. Shale seams, and underground acquifers for that matter, don't respect man made political borders. What you clowns do will affect us down here. But since when has unionism ever given a toss about others?

This will be a disaster unless someone can find a way to smuggle gas.

Not many people live in Fermanagh, so frack away ! A bit short sighted. A full environmental impact study needs to be carried out, independently of course.

Also, who cares about being a net contributor to the UK ? I'd much rather we hold onto our wealth and not give it to westminster. Leaving a side politics, I think most people in the north would feel the same.

    Dangers Posed by Fracking

Fracking chemicals are toxic and can contaminate water from spills or accidents.

Fracking produces hazardous wastewater, which can contain radioactive substances as well as toxic chemicals, making disposal difficult and dangerous.

Fracking requires millions of gallons of water, which can deplete local water supplies.

Fracking can cause natural gas to migrate into drinking water sources, which can cause houses and wells to explode.

There have been more than 1,000 documented cases of water contamination near drilling sites around the country.

As an environmental scientist I have dabbled in environmental legislation, so I will give my cents here.

It will probably go ahead, but not after years of surveying, testing, mitigation by independent environmental consultants.

All costs of protection of the environment have to be paid by the company with the NIEA all up their arse every single part of the way. Any damages and the company will get their arses sued. They won't be able to cut corners, nor would they want to. Water tests will be done monthly, any iffy business - NIEA has the power to pull the plug or at least fine heavily.

Environmental legislation is very very tight knit.
Love me. Cherish me. I'm a unionist.

Not sure if you're being wonderfully naive, or simply over optimistic. The unfortunate truth is that fracking has an extremely poor track record when it comes to environmental laws and planning.

What sort of history does this company have? 55 billion dollars worth of gas in County Leitrim seems pretty incredible, if true. Too good to be true.
