Plastic bag tax - this is long overdue.

When this was introduced in the Republic it had an immediate impact and reduced plastic bags meeing up the environment by 90%.
I think I'll now justified in doing a Factual by claiming this as another stunning success for SDLP policy.BBC News - Tax on plastic bags introduced in April 2013

Without having to look at foreign States we have a similar UK comparator with Wales in this regard. Extraordinary measures for extraordinary times I suppose, Minister Attwood's action can seem reasonable in the circumstances.

I'm glad to see it anyway. Most people in the south seem to bring reusable bags nowadays from what I can see. I'd like to see a chewing gum tax. They considered bringing that in in the Republic a few years back, but the FF government at the time were apparently lobbied by the US embassy, who were acting on behalf of Wrigleys, and dropped the idea.

Good show. TK Maxx had a policy of charging for bags up until a few months ago but seem to have dropped it recently. M&S charge for food bags, clothes bags are free for some reason. I and most of my friends take our own bags when shopping anyway which is a good habit to get into, though dont always have one when popping to the local shop, my bad.
Chewing gum tax would be a good thing, pedestrian areas are blighted by it all over.
