The economic argument wouldn't put me off, but I accept it would discourage some from a nationalist background at the moment.
However hopefully the Republic's economy will soon start to improve. And anyway it's not the only factor.
If Scotland goes independent, and I accept that's a big if, it will also influence matters.

Given that SF has been calling for an island-state since they formed and their movement was prepared to kill and destroy for this state, you'd think they'd have a paper on this concept already.

I'ts quite possible that SF can be the single largest party in the south and possibly in govt while they already the single largest aprty in the north. Would unionists prefer to deal with say, a FG/Labour or maybe FG/FF govt in power down here than a SF dominated island ?

A bloody stupid idea by Sinn Fein to have a referendum by 2016. The only people that they can rely on to vote for a united Ireland are Sinn Fein supporters, who are about 30% of the electorate. SDLP supporters are less ideologues than Sinn Fein and many of their supporters have never had a problem with the union, just with ulster unionists. A comprehensive defeat in a referendum would strengthen the union for many many years to come.

Sinn Fein have an opportunity to be voted the largest party in Northern Ireland at the next general election, something that they could get far more mileage out of than a failed referendum. I bet unionists can't wait.

This has nothing to do with the Good Friday Agreement*. What is interesting is that McGuinness feels the need to step outside of the GFA - he must feel that the SF and SDLP combined vote will not be sufficient to trigger a binding poll under the terms of the GFA. And that SF cannot achieve much more through Parliament here - as this is the second non-stormont stunt he has pulled since the last elections in NI

*And if it were, the 7 year gap is a minimum, the poll would not have to be automatically repeated after seven years.

SF have realised they will go no further via Stormont.

This referendum - if held - would NOT be under the terms of the GFA.
