Across the whole of Britain, 39 per cent of people said they want Scotland to be an independent country with 44 per cent against. The survey canvassed 2,019 adults, including 180 people in Scotland, using the question: “Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?”.

Given Scotland's oil, I don't think the EU would be putting obstacles in the way of their accession. It would seem highly improbable. The EU has given Norway a very favoured status despite its refusal to join, and that is surely all about its oil.
Having said that, I don't believe Scotland will actually choose independence, when the chips are down.
On a separate point, I really can't understand why people here are taking sides on this, along very predictable lines. It won't my life much either way, so I couldn't give a damn on a personal level what they do. I am interested though, as I would be if the Catalans or the Basques were trying seriously to leave Spain.
The EU would let Scotland into the Euro ok, but that's not a good thing for Scotland at all.

I don't think Scotland will leave the UK either and a failed referendum in 2014 will result in a decline for the SNP for many years to come. They have a chance in 2014 and under Salmond it's their best ever chance. However, as an Irish nationalist from NI I would have thought you would be keen for Scotland to leave the UK because I think the relationships within the UK would change completely and it would have a massive impact on NI.

What I'm saying is that the EU would almost certainly allow Scotland to enter without imposing any preconditions on what currency they adopted. Norway has been given access to the single market, and surely there is only one realistic explanation for that. Scotland would be very welcome as an oil-rich nation.
As for the changed relationships, I really don't think it would have much of an impact at all. I cannot see why it should, and to be honest I'm surprised that senior unionists are worried about that, but then, I suppose, what do I know (lol)?

Ireland stayed with Sterling untill 1970. It happens all over the world. The currency is not a factor here. Watched a debate this morning and the Nationalists ripped them apart. Unionist woman tried to like it to Ireland in '21 and the Balkans break up. The guy just burst out laughing at her. So did the studio audiunce, and me. The Nationalists have all the best arguments, because, they are right.

Think so? The Union is dying on its feet and will be gone in 15 years. Tops.

Sorry to be pedantic but the break came ten years later, in December 1979 when Ireland joined the so called "snake" mechanism - can't remember
the official name. If I recall correctly the currencies remained trading on a one to one basis until January 1980, when sterling drifted upwards.

Don't know about Scotland sir, but, the union between Britain and Ireland died on 10/5/1969, since that date, Ireland is in transition to a brand new place, devoid of Brit interference.

Apart from the 3.8bn loan they granted us.

Mickey you are testing my memory beyond its limits. I remember Burntollet in early January '69. And then there were the August riots in Derry, Belfast (and Armagh as well if I recall correctly.) What happened on the 10th of May?
