New plans for all-Ireland minimum alcohol price

BBC News - New plans for all-Ireland minimum alcohol price

Ms Shortall told the Irish Times that both administations were closely monitoring the Scottish National Party's plan to introduce a minimum charge which is considering charging 45-50 pence per unit of alcohol.

This would mean that a bottle of cider with 14 units of alcohol, which currently costs £2.30, would be increased to £7.
F**k off and die nanny state. £7 for a bottle of cider. There is no way I'm paying Southern prices for booze. Not to mention we make alot of trade here with Southern customers with our cheap booze. Bad idea, very very bad idea - could only come from the Duppers.

Well as long as the Republic continues to pay the duty the UK would lose out on because of this.

lol, my cousin's husband brews his own wine - its terrible though.

But laws like this will increase home-brewing - which can be quite dangerous to the untrained brewer and pubs are struggling at the minute as it is. Terrible terrible idea. Before you know it prohibition will come. The state should not be able to tell people what they can or cannot do with their own bodies.

At the end of the day ,all that increasing the price of alocohol will do is leave people with little money, even less. The less well off in society have little enough to look foreward to as it is ,so it ill begets well paid politicians and civil servants to decide what people should be able to afford.

Anything all Ireland has to be opposed by unionists, no matter how good an idea it is.

Haha, tough sh!t on you drunkards!
Seriously though, I don't think this is a good idea. People who have a drinking problem, will always find a way to get their drink no matter what the price of it is. Raising the price of drink dramatically will hit the people who drink socially or those who like a little drink while watching sports or after a hard day's work the hardest.

Ren, do you think that the Irish Government want an all-Ireland drink price cap because they are worried about the health of those in NI?

From my experience, booze prices differ very slightly. A pint in most non city centre pubs will cost you about €4 which is about £3.40. You can pick up a case of 24 bottles of Heineken in off licenses for €20 which is about £17. Is nordie booze significantly cheaper than that? It wasn't last time I was there anyway.

This would of course have nothing to do with the FRLT lobbying heavily over the cheap booze available in supermarkets etc. Their argument is that drinking in a bar as opposed to at home keeps a certain control over it and the better health for us all blah blah blah. Nothing of course do with the pricing in some of these establishments that is way over the odds.
Im sorry but as an adult I think I know my limits (most of the time) whether at home or in a bar.
