    New NI Police Ombudsman

BBC News are reporting that the former NI Police Oversight Commissioner Al Hutchinson has been appointed to succeed Nuala O'Loan as police ombudsman.

Originally from Canada, Mr Hutchinson is a graduate of Carleton University, Ottawa and Queen's University, Belfast.

Before his appointment as oversight commissioner in 2004, he served in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for nearly 34 years.

He is expected to take over from Mrs O'Loan next November.

Unionists have been putting pressure on O'loan to quit as "she has lost the confidence of the police service"

Well what did they expect?it goes with the job, investigating a corrupt sectarian colluding killing organisation is hardly going to make you their best friend.
Abstinence makes the Church grow fondlers.

I heard Baby Doc on this morning putting his characteristic bigotted slant on it. He talked about how it was a "fresh start" for the Ombudsman and that Hutchinson had no perceived "ideological baggage" (like a fenian name). Hutchinson has already stated that the Ombudsman should concentrate on the present, not the past, and this gave wee Ian a warm and fuzzy; as does his great relationship with the Police Federation. With the number of establishment puppets proclaiming the need to forget all about those pesky enquiries it is easy to see a pattern emerging.

The individual in charge of the office of the ombudsman while important, is not that critical to the outworkings of that office. It is how the office is made to work and that is down to ordinary individuals.

It is even more important than ever that those who advocated the pursuit of police accountability through this office are even more diligent in ensuring the ombudsmans' office dooe exactly what it was set up to do.
