Titanic ‘will be bigger than the Olympics’

A TRAVEL journalist has claimed that the Titanic commemorations in Belfast will be an even bigger draw for tourists than this year’s London Olympics.

And a top guidebook used by American tourists, Fodor’s, has dedicated eight pages of its Ireland 2012 guidebook to Titanic, describing it as the “world’s biggest tourism story in 2012”. Additionally, Fodor’s has named Belfast as one of the top 21 places in the world to visit in 2012.

    Titanic

Typical over the top nonsense but at the same time anything that brings in a few quid is welcome.

We have quite a few American posters on here (some who would rather not admit that they are!) can I ask is the titanic as 'big' an attraction as claimed?

Ps for the usual suspect’s yes I know it sank, get over it, I refer to it as the most famous submersible icebreaker in the world.

First of all I'm not attacking you btb(for once , but i have to say that is a ridiculous headline,
Are they implying that their will be more tourists attending these commemorations in Belfast than arriving in London to enjoy the festivities there??
Nielsen Media Research estimated that 4.7 billion people watched some part of the Beijing Olympics, almost certainly the most viewed TV event in history.
London is of course far more accessible than Beijing for the majority of countries whom would provide the large amounts of olympic tourists/ supporters.
A Titanic commemoration wouldn't even be on the same Richter scale in relation to attractiveness to tourists as the Olympics.

From a personal point of view,i wouldn't even be bothered with such an event if it were being held 10 miles down the road in Lough Erne.

The Olympics could be the 'Titanic' !

Britain has wished it had never sought the Olympics.

Rising costs, financial deficits and the enormous costs of running the games has brought more headaches than they can cope with.

Several Olympic projects have been downsized and there has been muted trumpeting of 'winning the Olympics for Britain'.

The government has to put on a brave face to put on the best show they can.

Hopefully, they will pull it off and overcome the many obstacles they face.

aye it is a ridiculous headline, but it is the article headline and i am sure it will 'attract' a few to read it! can i ask what it is that bothers CNR posters about the titanic? that it sank? that i was built by h&w? that it promotes 'norn iron'? the irony of 'pride' in something that was a failure? what?

ps. i am getting your location narrowed down!!!

Surely this is a headline from the early 20th Century? The RMS Titanic, when completed, was indeed bigger than the RMS Olympic.

I'll head over to see when it's done. The kids are into the whole story so it'd be good for them, maybe tie it in with a parade or something to save on the "not another orange thing" moan from the missus

    Bigger than the Olympics? Hardly.

It will attract some tourists no doubt, but i think they are blowing it completely out of proportion.
If you're talking from a Northern Ireland point of view,The Irish Open in Portrush will attract much more "external" visitors,as there will be a large contingent from the Republic that will attend.
Personally i don't care if it was built in Dublin by Tiocfaidh ar la shipbuilding and designed by Michael Collins himself.
I wouldn't cross the road to watch it.

I have always felt that they where pinning too much hope on the 'titanic' to attract external tourists no doubt that many of those that come here will visit the site etc but I don't think it will be the main reason for their visit (that’s why I was asking for the yank perspective)
Re your view on the ‘titanic’ I am genuinely interested and not trying to put you on the spot, but is it viewed as a ‘prod’ thing?

NI's greatest asset is it's scenery. North Antrim coast? Fermanagh? Not an county in Ireland can touch that place.
