SDLP/Alliance Refuse To Support Sinn Fein Mayor in Belfast

Earlier this evening, the SDLP and Alliance Party refused to support a S/F Councillor for Belfast Mayor.

Despite having previously agreed to support the Candidate, they proposed an Ulster Unionist Councillor. Who already held the position twice

    Shame on them all!

They are just rubbing SF's nose in it after the bad showing in the general election.

The SDLP are so worried about handing headlines to wha they see as their rivals.

In my view, there should be only one Irish political party in the NE to represent all Irish people there until time of re-unification.

This is an outrage! Thousands of feigned angry protestors are storming City Hall as we speak.
Wasn't that long ago PSF was calling for the Mayoral title and all it's elitist trappings of gold chain and luxury cars to be scrapped, as it was a waste of ratepayers money. 'Til they got a taste of the honey of course.

Don't be silly, a cursory glance at election results from the late 80's and early 90's culminating in the loss of the Adams seat to a SDLP/UDA axis merely exposes your ignorance of SF.

Could it be the other parties in Belfast City Hall are simply taking their lead from all of the other parties South of the border?

    Lies.

Sinn Féin did not support Pat McCarthy as Lord Mayor last year, so there was no reason for the SDLP to have supported Sinn Féin's proposal this year. What kind of agreement would have allowed SF to oppose the SDLP and then expect their support the following year?

    Shame on them all!
Why? Because they didn't vote for SF? Whatever happened to unionist outreach? The SDLP has done SF enough favours down the years- they owe the provos nothing and have paid the price electorally for assisting the provos along the road into electoral politics. Instead of calling foul, maybe SF should work towards agreement on rotation of the Lord Mayor in Belfast, as happens in the other nationalist-dominated cities. Instead they present themselves as demanding independent operators, and then cannot comprehend when the other parties don't dance to their tune.

No doubt SF will get a turn next year, and no doubt the SDLP will support them.

That's SF-speak for Prods getting-off their backsides for once and putting a decent domcrat into parliament and getting themselves representation. The same sort of muck was thrown at Durkan two years ago in Derry when he got a decent cross-community vote in Waterside that helped his majority and kept the Foyle seat dignified.
