The PSNI Historical Enquiries Team has this week produced reports into two fatal shooting incidents that took place in Belfast in 1992 and 1993.
The first incident took place on the afternoon of 5th February 1992 when UDA/UFF gunmen entered Sean Graham's bookies on the Ormeau Road, shot five men dead and wounded a number of others. Among the HET findings were that the RUC Special Branch handed back one of the murder weapons to UDA quartermaster Billy Stobie prior to the kilings. another finding was that investigating police failed to give sufficient consideration to a dangerous and unstable suspect, identified as 'Man A'.
The second incident occured one evening in March the following year when UDA/UFF gunmen entered premises at the Dariy Farm shopping centre on the outskirts of west Belfast and murdered 17 year-old Damian Walsh, who was working at the time. Undercover British soldiers who been observing a neighbouring unit, which was being used as an IRA explosives store, saw the killers arrive and leave but failed to intervene. Subsequently the army team provided incorrect information about the killer's getaway car to the police.
No-one was found responsible in relation to either incident, although two loyalists believed to have been involved in the bookies massacre were later themselves murdered by the IRA.
Specific questions to be answered include:
1. We know the late Billy Stobie was a police agent. Were other agents involved in the bookies massacre? Was Man A an agent?
2. The British Army must provide more information about the murder of Damain Walsh. How far was its surveillance team from the murder? Why didn't they intervene? Why did they provide wrong information about the killer's getaway vehicle to the police?
