I think the difference in relation to equal treatment isn't so much evident on either side of the border so much as it is in City v Country.

Both words in the sense that you are using them here have for long been interchangable...Why? Because gender is not an essentially "social construct" or something purely biological....Male and female differ from each other for more than reasons of social construction...There are psychic differences between occuring naturally aswell as biological.
