I was tempted to start this thread on the day that former 'bookies brigadier' and loyalist 'pin-up', Andre Shoukri, was released from prison last month (coincidentally the same day on which UVF 'whacked' former prisoner Bobby Moffet on the Belfast's Shankill Road) but I thought there might be a slim possibility that Shoukri would actually decide to adopt a low profile. Fat chance!

This morning's Irish News (sorry no link) reports that keen golfer, occasional tweeter and UDA capo de tutti capi, Jackie McDonald, is warning police that Shoukri has assembled a new gang and intends to seize back control of the paramilitary organisation in already volatile north Belfast. Attempted abductions and armed confrontations at Eleventh Night bonfires have been reported.

Agreed with you it's generally rubbish but I have been reading Justice For Raymond by his father Raymond McCord snr and he states sevral times that the Sunday World doggedly exposed RUC agent Mark Haddock and the Mount Vernon UVF who carried out the murder of his son when no one else would touch it. I'd normally consider it a joke but in this case they deserve praise. BTW the Book is an EXCELLENT read regarding the workings of RUC Special Branch and their protection of Loyalists. Raymond McCord snr mighht be described as a unionist with a small u - and a very small at that. However as you can read for yourself, thedepth of colluision between the RUC and loyalists is quite staggering - even for a Republican like me. And indeed, some of the unionist establishment such as Ken Maguinness did their best to blacken his name during the campaign to punish his sons killers. Excellent read.

Yes, I wouldn't disagree with you about Sunday World doing some excellant investigations in the past.

However, it's still a rag that regularly fills pages with Amanda Brunker's latest attempt to shift the sag.

The Sunday World actually does a great job of exposing loyalist thugs. Thus the UDA under Shoukri actually tried to prevent its distribution in areas where he held sway. The paper has loads of informants in the loyalist underworld (but not nearly as many in the dissident republican underworld).

I must get my hands on that book. Raymond McCord is an extremely brave man - an unsung hero. His story would make a good movie.
