It is not an easy question to answer due to the subtle nuances between the two.

I would say class is a major factor in that Loyalist are largely of a working class background.

It could be education which is the defining factor.

Supporting Rangers or Linfield rather than the Ulster Rugby Club or Northern Ireland football team.

Going to band parades rather than Orange Order Marches

However the one differential that I would draw on what defines a loyalist over a Unionist is the Loyalist's readyness to accept and use violence to meet their goals

So Tara or Ulster Resistance leaders were all working class.
