Bel Tel Poll reveals that nearly 60% want United Ireland

How would you vote in a referendum on NI joining a United Ireland?

Yes - Ireland should be united 59%
No - NI should remain part of the UK 39%
    Don't know 2%

According to the latest Belfast Telegraph poll, nearly 60% of people sampled wish for reunification. (as of thursday 18th)

Now theres a few things that we should read into these findings:
    Either;

    • A - "Were on the one road"
    • B - The poll was taken in a nationalist area
    • C - Nationalists and republicans have a lot of computers
    • D - The findings carry as much weight as the fabled NILT survey, which the tele also like to publish its findings.

    Now with added link!

That's nice, I think this issue should be more widely discussed. Whenever the topic is brought up, the Unionists just get p***ed off and leave the table. Perhaps there should be discussion of terms, I think a good proportion of ordinary unionists on the street would consider it if they could maintain a devolved assembly at stormount, optional British citizenship, an opt out of compulsary Irish at schools, along with a few other consessions. A black and white solution of uniting Ireland and treating those six counties as if nothing ever happened is largely out the window.

    Statistics are meaningless generally.

I wouldnt count on it being true. The Alliance Party though seem to have softened on their attitude to Irish unity.

yes stats are meaningless unless its the real thing.

do you reckon the alliance stance has softened due to the uk government under labour producing their withdrawal tactic through the GFA?

I also say that about the Unionists who pull out stats that a lot of people from RC backgrounds in the occupied six counties want to remain in the union.

To your second question and this is just speculation...I think it would be more to do with the armed campaign being over and changes in the Free State.

Exactly, and so from now on anyone trying to quote figures to make it look like a UI is some sort of pipedream.

    point them to the above.

Wheras this is an online poll where anyone in the world can vote, possibly numerous times, the real poll that matters is the people of the six counties, as laid out in the GFA.

before any sound of mind unionist would consider the proposal, There need to be serious changes to The Republic side of the border in human rights, for example:

    a) the Republic's poor health care

    b) we have an anti blasphemy law

    c) our upcoming civil partnership legislation is a joke compared to it's UK version

    d) child abusers and their friends can avoid prison sentences simply for being a catholic priest/bishop

also our government system too closely mirrors the British establishment. Our Senate is basically a replacement of the undemocratic house of lords and needs to be abolished.

There are also too many charges in our health, education, roads system that are regressive in that they impact most on the least well off.
