Anyway the SDLP doesnt seem to have much of a future....
I'm a unionist Catholic and I certainly wouldn't vote for a unionist party ( I will be for the next westminster election but that is because of the conservatives). If your a catholic who doesn't care about a united Ireland you don't have much choice politicaly in Northern Ireland
If we were all born equal we would all be white, middle-class, middle-aged men!

What? Are you suggesting that the Unionist parties are sectarian?

The Catholic unionists are there and they always have been, this presents a fairly big problem for your United Ireland I suppose. As I said though maybe some of the antics and behaviour of republicans over the years has pushed some over to our side. The like of trying to murder every Catholic that tries to make a living as a policemen could be a part of that.
The main street in Dublin is named after a Roman Catholic unionist...And a yeoman who helped put down the United Irishmen's insurgency.

Being happy with the status quo, is not the same as being pro union... people referred to as Unionist Catholics are more often than not happy with the status quo because they feel that they have a better health care system in Northern Ireland, and are financially better of living in Northern Ireland.

If the economics stacked up (which they definately don't at the moment) the majority of them would go for a UI

So Scotland simply saying screw you lot its ours would be akin to winning the lottery as part of a syndicate then telling the rest your keeping it all for yourself as it was your ticket with the winning numbers on it!

Scotland went from stregnth to strength under the Union in the 18th and 19th centuries, though it is more of a fractured relationship today.

The bulk of Scots are lowland presbyterians and weren't effected by things like the clearances and hated the Jacobites, they tended to support the union and still do.

The Scots took a leading role in the empire, they took their slice of the cake at the time and did well out of it, there are a number that like to play this down now and play the victim card but most acknowledge it rather than just blaming the English for all their ills.

A very misleading thread title. I read this article in the paper today and (if you believe polls are relevant, which they aren't) it was a good one for the union. A majority said they would vote for the maintenance of the union, including 25% of Catholics who were surveyed. The fact that some people think there will be reunification by 2021 isn't relevant. There won't be and that is a cold, hard fact.

The question about 2021 is meaningless. If the same question was put to TUV members they'd agree as its their raison d'etre. If they didnt have that "threat" hanging over them they would just fade away. Paisley banged on about it for half a century. Every "concession" was another step on the road to Dublin or Rome. Never happened though.

I think the UCUNF-DUP balls-up has put paid to that for a while. It would be nice to be wrong there, but my perception of recent events is that the DUP and UUP are trying to out-sectarian each other.
