The poll suggests little has changed in terms of opinions on the consitutional position on either side with the peace process and the end of the troubles. Most surveys during the troubles painted a similar picture.

Id say the 1 in 4 of unionists believing there would be a UI by 2021 would have been higher, so unionist confidence in the future has increased slightly.

Still the same substantial number of Catholics not for a United Ireland, and most Protestants for the Union which makes a UI a pretty distant prospect, if even a prospect at all. Getting 36% up to a majority is alot of work for nationalists, especially as these statistics seem to have changed very little over the last 30 years.

As someone said there are lies, damned lies and statistics..I have yet to meet any of these fabled people of Roman Catholic hertitage in the six counties who favour the Union...Just as I have yet to meet any Basques who support the Union of their nation with Madrid...And yet according to "statistics"...

Ah the old I don't like the look of those statistics so they must be made up.

Always followed with I have yet to meet any of these 'people', very good!

Maybe you need to move in some different circles then.

I have met unionist catholics. Just because you have never met them doesn't mean they are not there. I don't think anyone know everyone in Ireland (despite what the yanks think) do they?

Why is it than that the vast, vast majiority of those from RC backgrounds vote for the SDLP or PSF both parties commited to a united Ireland if so many of them are in favour of the union?

Unionist Catholics tend to vote SDLP, Alliance or not at all. Yes there are actually catholic unionists in the SDLP or at the very least catholics satisfied with the status quo.

It is quite concievable that some may vote SDLP but not vote for a UI if there was a referendum tomorow. People may just like the candidate they don't necessarily support every policy that party stands for. There will be some that don't vote for either and even some that vote UUP, Silvia Hermon got a fair number of Catholic votes in North Down.

Not everyone casts their vote 100% on whether they are for a UI or the UK, is it really that hard to comprehend?

Maybe they don't like the aura of protestantism of the current unionist parties, not really that hard to understand. Maybe they respect all the work the SDLP did in trying to achieve equality for catholics but with a border choice choose the status quo.
