Northern magistrate - a refreshing view.

With the now 9 month long marching season creeping into place in the northern six counties it was good to hear a magistrate giving vent to a long held view on the flags that adorn lamp posts year round. The magistrate commends a man here for taking down a rag or two that had been flying from a lamp post. Welcome news indeed.

Hi Pat, I have recently moved upto coleraine from cork city to study, and always heard about the curbs and flags but never realised how bad it was. it is quite intimadating, but what i dont get is how is ok to leave UVF flags up everywhere? Union Jacks from houses nothing can be done or should be done its there right but paramilitary flags are surely illegal on pulic lamposts? the sooner these flags are down the better. Also just how tense is the parade season in the coleraine area?

No; it's a sarcastic dig at those who like to pretend that their whole lives are ruined by bunting and marching.
Whereas those same people indulge in exactly the same stuff.

Good look with that my friend... Coleraine is probably one of the worst areas in the North for it.

I don't understand how the UVF flag is allowed. I once saw a marching band on Royal Avenue, belfast with UVF emblems on their jackets. I was told it refers to the Ulster Volunteers and Ulster Volunteer Force from 1913

Since both traditions fly flags surely these comments are going to open another can of worms, particularly with St Patrick's day coming up. Maybe the judge could have kept his gob shut instead of providing a defence to every Michael Stone of this world as to why they were climbing the lamp posts of West Belfast next Tuesday night.

Let's just say that Coleraine has it's moments.

As for the UVF flag, the supporters of that group do indeed claim the historical aspect, re WW1, as a reason to fly the flag.

The blight is simply that virtually every main arterial route is festooned with these flags. It can be a problem on the republican/nationalist side but is no where near the scale on the unionist/loyalist side.

It is time that a serious attempt was made to tackle this problem. Examples of where the PSNI act as guard while known paramilitaries use a cherry picker to flood the Ormeau Rd with flags have to be knocked on the head once and for all.

We still have people referring to the "old IRA", so this cuts both ways.
