Political shambles just beginning? Alliance refuse to nominate Justice minister.

BBC News - Alliance not ready to nominate justice minister
Mr Ford - who is the favourite to take the position eventually - has said his party is not yet in a position to put forward a name.

He said there had not been enough progress on some key issues.

The Ulster Unionists and the SDLP have insisted Alliance has no right to the post under the d'Hondt system for selecting ministers, which was agreed in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

The first and deputy first ministers are also due to appoint a new working group on parades.

    -------------------

How many deadlocks can you create from a deadlock?

Seems like you're a nobody unless you can stall or have a go at messing up Stormont.
Its the new game, all the cool kids are doing it.

As I've suspected the shambles only begun after the DUP and SF came to an 'agreement', and agreement that hasnt been implimented yet and will also be blocked by the UUP.

Carlsberg dont do disfunctional states and useless politicians but if they did...

But if all parties multi-laterally agreed to a methodology (d'Hondt) in the GFA for appointing ministers, SF and the DUP should not get to subvert that process just because they are the biggest parties. I agree that more deadlock is not good, but SF and the DUP should have thought that through.

Its interesting that the UUP are insisting that Alliance has no right to the Position, would that insistance lead them to support an SDLP nomination. Sinn Fein have already said that they would support an SDLP momination, would Ulster Unionist support qualify as the cross community support required, or are the DUP the cross community support that counts.

Of course this is all hypothetical, as I can't see the UU actually putting their money where their mouths are

If it went to a vote and required cross community support then it would require a unionist majority and a nationalist majority, which effectively means the DUP and SF have each got a veto on cross community votes.

    Political shambles just beginning?

Has it ever been anything other than a political shambles

First off, as P+J were not devolved under the BA or the SAA, d'Hondt doesn't apply. The SA states that it's up to the office of the FM/DFM to find someone who has cross community support. The APNI will grandstand for a while, but the ministry is theirs. As for Mark Durkin, he's about as much "above politics" as Ian Paisley.

Is it the case that P & J are not actually devolved until the "new" parades committee reports back satisfactorily and this "satisfaction is far from gaurenteed.
Did we just see a great big fudge last week as no party could afford an election at this juncture.

Alliance want more progress on CSI before they nominate.

I would be willing to offer them concessions on that score.
