    Belfast Telegraph Assembly Election Poll

Great news for the Green Party. 3% would be a big jump on past results for us in the North.

    DUP + UUP = 41%
    SF + SDLP = 42%

If this poll is correct then it is bad news for SF. With the SDLP only 2 points behind then the SDLP could overtake SF with tranfers in a number of constituencies to take seats off them and become the largest nationalist party.

The only doubt in my mind is whether opinion polls up North still understate SF support as they used too as people were reluctant to state publically that they support SF in the period of the troubles. Is this still the case, is there still an understatement of SF support. If not then the SDLP will be energised by this poll!

I suppose if you look at it in head-count terms, you could add the three 1%'s (Conservative, PUP and UKUP), plus most of the Alliance support, to the Unionist total, giving you something in the region of a 50-45 split.

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

Whats the point of this poll? its only 6 days to the election!
Polls polls polls, people take more interest in polls than they do reality.
No small scale poll is ever going to give an accurate idea of what will happen in the north, people dont answer polls the exact same way they do elections, there is too much suspicion, also a nationalist has nothing to gain by telling a poll that they are a republican but everything to gain by voting republican.

To attempt to affect the result of course. Watch for similar in the run-up to May.

You're being naive if you don't think that such polls, so close to polling day can sway undecided voters.
On one level, the press are simply doing this for sales and because it's become a habitual tool to generate stories. A bit like other tired formats the media indulge in. I'm not accusing the Bel Tel of generating the results to a specific agenda, though I do recall members of your own party accusing the Sindo of exactly that not so long ago.

I honestly wouldn't waste time debating the ins & outs of a Northern poll. they're always way out.
