Personally speaking, when I first heard Ricky O'Rawes allegations some years ago I was very angry with him as I thought here is a man dissafected with the PRM leadership who has used his position as a former PRO in the Blocks and the fact that he was doubled up with Bik to strike a very low blow against Adams et al. If the truth be told I didnt want to believe anything but the signed, sealed, neatly packaged, PRM 'approved' version. In short, for me to doubt that version was too appalling a vista to contemplate...............then.

But with other events casting a shadow over the bearded ones behaviour and his versions of quite a lot of subsequent events I became more open minded. Eventually, as is the case with any rational human being with even the minimum amount of independent thought in the same set of circumstances , I came to personally realise that Adams is quite a stranger to the truth when it suits him or his vision of the real politique . This realisation came as quite a shock to me at the time but the 'truth' is a compelling persuader.


Many of the 'facts' or versions of the events of the stailc mor of 1981 are well documented and it just takes one to approach the data with an open mind. Pe-disposed bias or ideological prejudice is an unreliable tool for the 'truth seeker!' Theres no point in me repeating them all here as they are available for anyone to read again but circumstantially speaking alone who has the greater motivation for telling lies, who stands to lose most most from the 'truth?' An unemployed one time author or a professional career politician whose whole career was literally founded on their 'version' of 1981? I know what I believe now given the steady drip of revelations..Unlike some who have come to accept that there is a spark of truth in Ricky's revelations, I would be very sceptical of Liam Clarke's involvement in this affair. Unless I am seriously mistaken of course, his antecedents would not suggest to me that he has any honourable intentions towards any hue of contemporary Republicanism

However prisoners still had to do prison work. That was only done away with after the 1983 escape.

The requirement to do prison work is something that republican prisoners no doubt found humiliating and offensive - the type of thing that common criminals have to do.

The July offer did not abolish this requirement.

Dishonest as usual Picador. Richard O Rawe and other Blanketmen have stated that the offer constituted four of the five demands, I think they're somewhat more qualified than you to make that judgement call.

The Five Demands

1. The Right not to wear a prison uniform;
2. The Right not to do prison work;
3. The Right of free association with other prisoners;
4. The Right to organize their own educational and recreational facilities;
5. The Right to one visit, one letter and one parcel per week.


The July offer from Thatcher

I. extend to all male prisoners in Northern Ireland the clothing regime at present available to female prisoners in Armagh Prison (i.e. subject to the prison governor’s approval);

II. make available to all prisoners in Northern Ireland the allowance of letters, parcels and visits at present available to conforming prisoners;

III. allow the restoration of forfeited remission at the discretion of the responsible disciplinary authority, as indicated in my statement of 30 June, which hitherto has meant the restoration of up to one-fifth of remission lost subject to a satisfactory period of good behaviour;

IV. ensure that a substantial part of the work will consist of domestic tasks inside and outside the wings necessary for servicing of the prison (such as cleaning and in the laundries and kitchens), constructive work, e.g. on building projects or making toys for charitable bodies, and study for Open University or other courses. The prison authorities will be responsible for supervision. The aim of the authorities will be that prisoners should do the kinds of work for which they are suited, but this will not always be possible and the authorities will retain responsibility for decisions about allocation.

3. Little advance is possible on association. It will be permitted within each wing, under supervision of the prison staff.

4. Protesting prisoners have been segregated from the rest. Other prisoners are not segregated by religious or any other affiliation. If there were no protest the only reason for segregating some prisoners from others would be the judgment of the prison authorities, not the prisoners, that this was the best way to avoid trouble between groups.
