Lady Hermon refuses to attend UUP Conference

The Ulster Unionists' only MP, Sylvia Hermon, has said she refused to attend the party's conference because of her unhappiness at a pact with the Tories.

Speaking to the News Letter, she said she could not "go along and pretend to endorse" the electoral link-up.

Lady Hermon was pictured in a Sunday newspaper apparently walking her dog as the conference took place on Saturday.

The Conservatives and UUP will select joint candidates to fight NI seats at the next general election.

She seems to be a person of integrity, a rare thing in politics at the moment. I hope she is re-elected.

Well the problem for the UUP is that Hermon is incredibly popular in North Down, You really dont hear a bad word about her.

Also she is echoing the view of many UUP members, who really dont want to be beholden to the Tory party. The only people Unionists trust less than SF and Dublin are the British government. The DUP already are beginning to send the message they will stand up for Ulster to all comers and are not beholden to anybody.

Reg Empy looked like a sad little man talking his Ulster Loyalist nonsence at a Conservative conference in England where no-one is listening nor cares.
The same way they behave in Westminster when something pops up about the north.
The whole place treats it like a lunch break.

I feel sorry for him a bit.
This link up is some pathetic attempt to get closer to the next hated Priminister of the UK.
I cant see this doing them any favours.

I`m sure folks from Donegal will be overjoyed to hear this.
Not so sure about the Cavan and Monaghan crew though.

The only message the DUP are sending out is that theyre raving loony bigots.
Although that equates to 'standing up for' something in Unionist circles.

The DUP are absoutly bonkers with their openly racist attitude, creationism and hompohobia - all dictating their every move.

The Labour Humanist: DUP creationists: Will they succeed in turning Northern Ireland into the new Kansas?

Exactly, I have hope from time to time about element of the UUP moving towards something resembling normal politics that is not totally dominated by hate.

How will the conservatives deal with the fact that catholics are effectively banned from running for the UUP? They have asian and black people effectively running for the Tories in England, its going to take some explaining to the average Brit why Catholics are not to be tolerated about the place.
