'Saintly giant' plan for city river

Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Rio has Christ the Redeemer and New York has the Statue of Liberty, but Derry is now vying for world attention with plans for its own city landmark.

A gigantic monument of Saint Columba is being considered for the middle of the River Foyle.

The major sculpture would dominate the river. It would be dedicated to Columba, whose connection with the city stretches back for centuries. BBC News

ah why not? Hope it happens.Beats the spire anyway
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

I assume you dont like it because of the religious connection, but truth be known, Colm Cille was as much warlord as he was 'saint'.

Most of what we know is probalby distorted to some degree or another but he's not really a religious figure to me, more an interesting historical figure?

I say go for it. It could also become a symbol for all traditions to show pride in our ancient history?
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

THis is Paddys Vanity Project. What a load of rubbish and a waste of money. Derry has huge need for inward economic and social investment it doesnt need this ugly monstrosity. This proposal of a 160 foot high gaelic saint in already being seen as a big 'up yours' to the unionist community on the waterside. I think we have enough 'religious' statues in Ireland to do us, how about spending €15 million on tackling sectarianism and making Derry a city that everyone is welcome in.

I think with a cross and a book in his hands, which are outstretched to the sky, (see the mock up on the link) the sculptor might be going for the religious man rather than the warlord - but I'm just guessing? Maybe there's a shield and a sword under his cassock? And, if you think he was more a warlord than a saint and you think that we should show pride in our ancient history wouldn't it be therefore more historical to show him as a warrior.

Seriously, there are enough cathedrals and churches without the need for a giant statue holding a cross and a bible over the city. Forgive me, but I can't see how a huge religious symbol in the centre of Derry is supposed to "bring the community together"? I mean, historically, religion hasn't provided a great means by which all the people of Derry could come together, has it?

This is a terrible, artistically and culturally naive idea, and I hope for the people of Derry it's rejected out of hand.

Has nobody noticed that this statue would be unforgiveably ugly?
